It’s the first day on a new job, the first day meeting new colleagues, the first day handling a new project. We’ve all been there. Making a great first impression is important no matter what situation you are in. The ten tips below will increase your success and help you to create the great first impression you are looking for.

Tip #1. Be confident. There are so many times we are thrown into new situations and immediately go into panic mode. When it’s your first day on the job try to remember you have nothing to prove and are there for a reason. Be confident in the skills that got you where you are in the first place.

Tip #2. Be open to learning new things. Nobody knows everything. There are always going to be others who are more seasoned than you are. That does not mean they are better than you. One of the best ways to make a good impression is to express that you are always willing to learn more. Take advice and learn from your new colleagues.

Tip #3. Take initiative. Being able to take initiative is an essential leadership skill, even if you are new on the job. One way to take initiative is to say ‘yes’ to new opportunities. If you are unfamiliar with the task that is okay, you can learn as you go.

Tip #4. Own your mistakes. This one may seem like a no brainer but it is actually a lot harder than it sounds, especially when you are in a new work environment. It may seem easier to brush things under the rug, but honesty goes much further. You will make mistakes, everyone does. As long as you are able to admit them, become a part of the solution, and learn from your mistakes, you’ll be okay. Constructive criticism is inevitable, it is how you receive and handle feedback that will set you up for success.

Tip #5. Use those active listening skills. Ever had a moment when your coworker is talking to you and you’re totally zoned out? Perhaps thinking about what is for lunch or what your after-work plans are? That is not the situation you want to be in when trying to make a great first impression. Instead, stay focused and engaged in what is being said, take notes, and try paraphrasing before you respond. Not only will this show you actually listened, but it will help you to better retain the information given and form a proper response.

Tip #6. Ask clarifying questions. Nothing like having no idea what is going on and not doing anything about it. This can seriously hinder your performance at work. When you are new on the job asking questions can be intimidating, but it is necessary – not only that, it’s expected. Do not be afraid to ask questions. Asking questions will help you to better understand the task and meet the needs of your boss. Better to ask questions and get the job done, then to not ask any and risk missing the mark, or worse, your deadlines.

Tip #7. Use proper workplace etiquette. This is a big one. Workplace etiquette is the umbrella for topics such as: considering your audience when speaking, being on time, email etiquette, double checking your work, and following the dress code.

Tip #8. Stay positive. It is easy to get inside your head when you are trying to make a great first impression. Usually, we are focused on dodging all the things that could go wrong. Instead, put your best foot forward and focus on what can go right. Walk into new situations with a ‘can do’ attitude, and show your new team just how excited you are to be there.

Tip #9. Be flexible. The fact is, organizations are always changing. It is your job to be able to adapt while staying focused on your job. This is a challenging tip, but being able to adapt to challenges and new situations will make you a stronger problem solver.

Tip #10. Be yourself. At the end of the day, remember to be yourself when entering this new environment, it will make you and your new coworkers more comfortable.
