Life Lessons from an HR Pro: Perspectives from our Director of Talent & Development Monica Jones
Monica Jones, PHR
In Human Resources, leadership is often about balancing people and policy — but the best HR leaders know it’s also about changing perceptions and leading with authenticity. For women in HR, that means pushing past old stereotypes and embracing the qualities that make them exceptional leaders.
1. What is one tip you would give your past self, or women trying to make their mark in HR?
Don’t let HR get a bad reputation — and don’t silently accept the stereotypes. We’ve all heard it: “Uh oh, here comes HR… someone must be in trouble.”
My advice? Have something clever ready. Shift the narrative in the moment. A simple, lighthearted response like, “Actually, I’m here to make things better, not scarier,” can change the tone instantly.
HR isn’t the department of punishment — it’s the department of people. We drive culture, protect fairness, develop leaders and build workplaces where employees can thrive. As women in HR, we have a unique opportunity to reshape how the function is perceived. Step confidently into the strategic side of HR. Be visible in conversations about growth, innovation and leadership — not just compliance.
Own your voice. Redefine the story.
2. What is your favorite thing about being a woman?
Having all the emotions. 😊
I truly believe that being empathetic, emotional, hormonal, intuitive — all of it — makes me extraordinary in my role as an HR Director. What some might label as “too emotional” is actually emotional intelligence. It’s the ability to read the room, sense unspoken tension and understand what someone needs before they even articulate it.
Empathy allows me to connect. Intuition helps me anticipate challenges. Emotional awareness strengthens conflict resolution and leadership development. These qualities aren’t weaknesses — they are strategic advantages.
Being a woman means I lead with heart and head. And in HR, that balance isn’t just powerful — it’s essential.
